About

What started as an audio podcast, then grew to include a video podcast, is now an “EXPERIENCE.” F-Stop Beyond, the shows, are personal interviews with the world’s top photographers. Beyond business and branding, beyond talent and technique, we delve into the heart of the visual artist.
F-Stop Beyond “The EXPERIENCE,” is a litany of original programming designed to inspire, encourage, and entertain professionals involved in visual media. It’s our hope to offer a fresh perspective by delving into poignant and sometimes personal topics that reveal the real people behind the lens.
The Shows
Our current line-up includes:
- F-Stop Beyond (the original audio podcast): ranked as one of the top 10 artists podcast in 2008 on Podbean.com, this is the show that started it all. There are already so many podcasts about photography that cover f-stops and Photoshop, business and branding, but host Ron Dawson couldn’t find any that really got into the meat of WHO the photographer IS, rather than HOW he or she shoots. A big fan of NPR’s “Fresh Air,” Ron decided to create the podcast equivalent for photographers. So in September 2007, with his video camcorder to record at the annual Pictage PartnerCon in Los Angeles, Ron started interviewing some of the nation’s top wedding and portrait photographers. The show has now grown to over 100 interviews with guests from just about every aspect of photography: weddings, portraits, fashion, commercial, and photojournalism. Our guest list has included high profile names like Chase Jarvis, Vincent Laforet, and Joey L, as well as artists you may not necessarily heard of, like Flickr phenom Deobrah D. Lattimore, and a blind photographer from the Netherlands, Alex de Jong. If they use a camera to express their art, and they have an interesting story to tell, we want them on the show.
- F-Stop Beyond: In Living Color (aka F-Stop Beyond TV): the video flavor of the audio show, we like to think of it as a cross between Oprah, Barbara Walters, Charlie Rose, with a dash of AMC’s The Actor’s Studio.
- The Longest Day: the first online reality TV show for and about pro photographers. We took 24 of North America’s top wedding and portrait photographers, split them into two teams, and gave each team 24 hours to conceive, shoot, and edit both an original short film AND a public service announcement for a charitable cause. Besides being loads of fun, the show raised $5,000 for Thirst Relief International and Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.
- Crossing the 180: The Filmmakers Podcast that Breaks All the Rules: the newest creation from FSB host/creator Ron Dawson, this is to filmmakers what F-Stop Beyond is to photographers. Since Ron is a filmmaker himself, he could no longer fight the urge to have the same kind of in-depth, poignant and personal conversations with professionals in his industry. And like FSB, guests run the gamut from the obvious to the obscure. Established professionals in Hollywood like X-Men producer Ralph Winter, or Terminator: Salvation DP Shane Hurlbut; to social media juggernauts like international cinematographer and HD DSLR guru Philip Bloom; to amazing short film filmmakers like fellow Atlanta local Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion Pictures; and even wedding and event filmmakers like wunderkind and USC film grad Kevin Shahinian.
In the future we hope to bring you more exciting, informative, and insightful programming. If you have suggestions for guests on any of the shows, feel free to email ron@fstopbeyond.tv and tell us who, what show, and why. Be sure to include links to any websites that will help us learn more about the person.
